CIR Awards 2014

As the song goes …
“Oh what a night!”
29th May 2014 saw the CIR Awards 2014 return to the Hilton on Park Lane, London and it was an evening packed with great people, many laughs and worthy winners of many awards!
The evening was superbly put together by Deborah Ritchie and her team at CIR Magazine and they are the only people who despite not walking away with an award, truly deserve one!
Our host for the evening was the comedian Jo Caulfield and she was on top form!
Because of course this is an awards ceremony and among many worth winners…
… there was me!
Now, as Jo explained at the outset of the evening “You come up. You collect your award. You leave!” So no speeches! Which is just as well as I hadn’t prepared anything! …
Or had I?!!
In good Business Continuity style, I of course had the following speech prepared “Just in case” … So here it is … This may get emotional.
“I’d like to thank each and every person who voted for me in the ‘Industry Personality Award’! It may sound like a cliché but being nominated and shortlisted is a real honour, but winning it really is a genuine surprise especially when you consider who I was up against!
The award means a lot to me and I think demonstrates that there is a real interest in Business Continuity, but it needs to be fuelled with enthusiasm and passion. Which I hope I deliver!
As Business Continuity Professionals we write plans we know will never be complete, hope will never be needed and if they are, will never be 100% successful. This makes our task often a thankless one. So to be honoured by being nominated is fantastic, to win is truly amazing but I’d like to say “Thank you!” to everyone who understands how important Business Continuity is and helps drive forward this fascinating topic!”
[Pause for applause]
I’m sure if I would have had time to give the speech, the room would have been on its feet! (Heading to the bar .. but on its feet nonetheless).
What made receiving the award special was being handed the award by Keith Tilley Exec VP of SunGard a long-time friend and colleague. I’ve known Keith since his days at Comdisco (remember them anyone?) so it was great to see him at the event again. Thanks Keith!
Please don’t underestimate the achievement of my winning this award as I was certainly up against some great people but both Steve Yates and Tim Armit who were present, were very gracious and pleased for me. Thank you guys!
I managed to catch up with Deboarh Ritchie of the CIR Magazine and one of the judges, following the awards and they explained that it had been one of the toughest years to create the shortlist for all the awards. “All entrants were so strong!” they explained.
Having been a judge previously, I therefore appreciate how difficult it must have been to put the finalists together.
Speaking of my ‘Industry Personality Award’ Deborah explained that my nomination came due to the knowledge I have, the passion I show and the help I provide in the industry. “Your enthusiasm is infectious!” she explained. Words I’ll be carrying with me for a long time!
Everyone who attended enjoyed a spectacular evening and again Deborah and her team at CIR Magazine deserve thanks for their efforts.
And so the evening ended with laughter, roulette wheels, music and dancing into the early hours. As the evening progressed I thanked my hosts and I took the short walk to my hotel.
Not even the “Playboy Bunny” standing outside the “Playboy Club” on Park Lane could draw my attention as I left, clutching my award closely to me. Honest…
