According to a 2012 survey the Internet is dominated by 12 to 34yr olds, which is interesting when you consider that when I spoke at a school recently only 2 out of 260 pupils expressed an interest in going into a career in IT.
Name of the Game
But maybe it’s not a surprise at all. IT is still perceived (and possibly taught) as such a specialist topic that a ‘career in IT’ sounds as appealing as watching grass grow for a living! (Apologies if you’ve aspirations of being a gardener).
When I asked the class of 13-14yr olds “Who’s looking at a career in IT” only 2 hands were raised… but when I asked “Who has used a laptop this weekend? Who’s used Social Media?” “Who’s used a games console?” All hands were raised…
So despite feeling a little downhearted about the lack of interest in “IT” it’s clear to see that EVERYONE use’s technology in some way and therefore EVERYONE has an interest in technology.
I spoke at the school to give them something to think about in relation to their own careers and I hope I achieved this, because I broadened their views of what a career in ‘IT’ could look like. Those thinking of becoming lawyers could help share the international laws on data sharing and data control. Those looking to develop careers in engineering will need to understand how processes will be automated using technology and how those technologies will function if they don’t function correctly.
From the medical profession to the finance sector, from policing to armed forces we all use technology so a ‘career in IT’ is no longer quite what you expect it to be.
In schools we (possibly) need to stop focusing on the term ‘IT’ and instead break the topic down into its constituent parts; Information and Technology. Both are important and impact every aspect of our lives. I hope the kids who listened to me talk were inspired, but I was afraid to ask the 260 if there were any MORE people interested in IT following my talk… I could have scared off the 2 who were!
My thanks to Ahead Partnership for inviting me to attend the school and speak for them.
